Taking city streets back from cars isn't such a bad idea, it isn't even communism, lol

It’s better for both pedestrians AND drivers, as driving in congested cities isn’t fun, it’s the total opposite of fun.

I’m all for it. Cities without cars are sooooo much better. Live somewhere with good public transportation and you’ll never want to live anywhere else.

I think that’s a given and shouldn’t be up for much debate at all, given the ability for all parties to agree on bright lines of demarcation.

The question is where the line is drawn and, more often than not, the line drawn by proponents of such initiative is “well, you’ll always have race tracks” which is horeshit.

1. Tracks are expensive pieces of real estate

2. Sprawl continues to push race tracks further and further outside of urban areas due to development and resultant NIMBY complaints. I live in a dense urban area and it’s a solid 1.5 hours to the closest race track, often more if there’s any traffic. That’s simply not doable for someone who wants to regularly enjoy driving if we’re going to resign driving to closed courses

3. I like driving on public roads, period. This kind of coincides with point #2, but the ability to hop out on the road in the early morning or late at night is a much greater attraction to me than the pure pursuit of speed.

If we can come to a reasonable compromise on taking cars out of city centers, that’s fine by me, but I so rarely see that opposition taking a moderate stance. Riding cities of, first, human drivers, and then cars altogether, is a moral imperative for many on that side of the argument, and moral imperatives cannot be negotiated with or rationalized. It’s an all or nothing endeavor.

Just gotta find someone to pay for that sweet sweet transit in low tax/low amenity Murka.

Relegate, not resign, and ridding, not riding. *sigh*

I love cars, and love driving - but having once lived in Chicago for 8 years, this is fact.

I’m sure everyone living in rural and suburban ‘Murica will happily chip in for that...

6 months in Prague was enough for me. I could get anywhere in the city in under 30 minutes.

You could copy Spain and just abuse of Germany’s good lending credit in a complex international monetary system... Italy and Greece did it too! with almost no side effects.

You could also do it our way and endept an entire generation of lawmakers because you didn’t want to hike taxes.

When. will. people. understand. nice. things. cost. money.

Come on, we’re the big cities, sometimes we need to remind them whose boss! Who has the money ya’ll!

Then they’ll starve us to death without food...

Well, worry not, Spain is the 14th country with the most cars, at almost six out of ten people within it having a motor vehicle to their name! Spanish highways are also better than American highways and traffic in their cities is significantly less than in America. Streets will always exist and the whole concept of super illes in Barcelona is actually good for us car people because it gets the “Camry Dent” crowd out of the roads. If perhaps we’re more limited in the city, rural areas will rarely be able to have public transport at a cost that is acceptable to the people in them because public transport requires volume and density, thus cars won’t go away, at least in our collective lifetimes.

Nice things cost money, but the last thing needed right now is more regressive taxation - which is what we have here.

Well, yeah, but Vox didn’t talk about it... Unless americans get used to paying more taxes (and I mean, ALL americans) Y’all are never gonna have nice shit like Germany. Spain has been suffering for the last eight years because their former PM promised low taxes and high assistance... I wonder if that reminds me of someone... (AHEM TRUMP AHEM LOPEZ)

All would pay more, but those at the top would need to pay a lot more, as they do in legitimately first world nations. Indeed, the so-called right idea of tax cuts and more money wasting never works out well.

However, in terms of population density and residential layout, comparing the US to Germany in terms of transit infrastructure will always be apples to oranges. Germany is a more developed nation in more than just infrastructure.

Certainly a progressive tax is king; Ben Carson’s flat tax idea is simply stupid and talks about the big issue with people not understanding how a society works. But perhaps in order for Americans to want such a scheme they might want to have less stagnant wages before all the tax hikes :/

Germans aren’t as much into the temporarily embarrassed millionaire syndrome that besets so many in Murka, they still have something of a viable middle class, and more progressive taxation - without the top few threatening to leave in revolt. Funny how things work when people realize the value of social goods.

Flat tax is another dopey idea embraced by those who fell for Ayn Rand when their minds were developing.
